though I would have preferred to get some ‘native’ perspective on the reasoning behind the controversy, I was unable to not find any academic sources in English or was unable to access them. This could be important since foreign academic can miss an integral part in the analysis whilst an author from Malaysia can add perspective of what happened on the ground. For instance, while reading Malaysian newspaper resources, an article cited how Herald has had previous clashes with the government about the screening of the film Passion of the Christ. This raises question on the newspaper’s relation with the government and if it was targeted for such reasons. 15Yet none of the academic sources explore this. Due to my inability to access and understand Malay sources I cannot pursue an answer. Yet to compensate, the existing literature that are presented in this literature review, draw on a variety of approaches to explain the puzzle. This provides the reader with a better understanding and insights of the public and political space in the course of the seven years. Nevertheless, I think there are two main conceptual gaps and limitation that are found in the three groups presented in the literature review. The first is how some authors assumed that a number of Malaysian organizations and institutions have had an unbiased and continuous stance and only outside pressures were in play.
